My Classroom

As I've been reading Debbie Diller's book Math Work Stations I've been thinking about my classroom setup and how I can improve it in order to facilitate more station activities. I decided to get out my copy of another of Debbie Diller's books Spaces and Places and reread it...and then I am going to rearrange my classroom!!! We have lost 1 (possibly 2) 2nd grade units due to RIF, so my class size will increase from 18 to possibly 23. I definitely need more space! I love my reading loft, but if I can't rearrange and fit it in I will have to take it home :(
So here is my classroom now...and I will post pictures at the end of the summer of the "new and improved" version!

  3. I love the pocket chart that you are using for your "Reading Station Choice Board". It is such a pretty blue color. Where did you get it? I love your whole room. I am sure that the kiddos love the reading loft. I can imagine that is the place to be!

  4. Amber, I don't know where the pocket chart came from...I inherited it from a retiring teacher who was giving things away. It is just a 100s pocket chart and I know you can get them in the regular blue color at Classroom Direct, Really Good Stuff, and at most teacher supply stores. I'm not sure I'm going to use it next year...it was a little small for my students to maneuver themselves. It worked fine as long as I created their rotations, but when I began to give them choice to choose their own stations it got chaotic! (Could have just been the class I had!!) I have used the same format before using a regular pocket chart with larger pictures and icons. If you want to use a 100 chart I will be happy to share the task cards I printed up.

  6. Debra,
Thanks for the information. I just loved the color so much it made me smile. I didn't really have anything in particular in mind for it but if I ever do see it in a store I will have to buy it! I actually have Thistle Girl Daily Five choice cards that I used this year, I guess great minds think alike!! I really do love your classroom especially how you incorporated bright colors in with the Hollywood theme. I have been considering switching my theme for next year (I have done a jungle theme in the past) but want to keep my bright blues and greens. I am going to keep thinking on that but, thanks for all the inspiration!!

  7. Debra,

Your blog is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing such creative ideas. I will be moving to second grade for the first time next year. I have spent 12 in first grade and 4 years in secondary education.
To mark the occasion, I have started a second grade blog and would love for you to check it out. I don't have much content yet, but I blog fairly regularly! I actually have two blogs related to education, one for second grade and one for technology integration. Please hop over sometime and check them out!

  9. Hi there! I know this is an old post but I came across it when I was looking for inspirations for a classroom loft. I was wondering if you were able to keep it after rearranging your classroom. Also, did you have trouble getting a loft approved for your room? No one in my school has one and I am afraid the powers will turn it down:( Any information would be helpful!
    Thank you!
